Organic Seeds | Following Our Gardening Journey

| June 21, 2011 | 1 Comment

A few months ago I ordered some organic seeds from Seeds of Change, an organization that supports sustainable organic and heirloom gWritRams Organic Garden Sproutingrowers. Since we are only going to do some container gardening, I ordered things that would grow well in pots–tomatoes, peppers and a variety of herbs.

Per the usual for me lately, I ordered late (which means some of the things I wanted were already sold out) and got a late start in planting. This also means that we’ll be eating our tomatoes around Thanksgiving while all of you enjoyed your garden tomatoes with your summer sandwiches. (Kidding. They’ll probably be ready at Halloween.)

This yeWritRams OrganiLo ar, I decided to be daring and try some tomato varieties (and colors) that I know NOTHING about except their exotic sounding names and the brief description on the website–Yellow Perfection, Cherokee Purple, Costaluto Genovese and others.

I was particularly excited this year because, at 3 years old, my daughter is old enough to help and semi-understand the process and the importance of growing something and reaping the benefits–especially in your own organic, healthy food.

She helped me fill the pots with organic soil and then plant and water the seeds.

Every day she came outside and looked for our “vegebles.” When they finally sprouted, she walked over, looked down at them and said:

Those aren’t vegebles. Those are just PLANTS.

I’ll keep you posted on our gardening journey…and the learning curve.

  1. that is a great project to undertake with a little one, you will love it!

I just bought a number of tomato, pea, pepper and CATNIP plants which I planted in pots on our 2nd floor balcony (we live in a condo)…I started late too (last week)…they are really taking off!

I am going to post photos on my blog tomorrow of how they looked when they were first planted then next week I will do an update.
    Have fun!
