Silk Tie Dyed Easter Eggs: Safe to eat?

Last year, I posted about a fantastic Easter egg dyeing party we had based on a really cool idea I read over on PartyBluPrints.com. Instead of coloring Easter eggs the old fashioned way (food coloring or those color pellets you buy from the store), you use material cut from old silk ties or scarves.

I’m not going to lie, the process was fun and the eggs were beautiful, but I’ve always had a haunting question in the back of my mind: “Are these eggs safe to eat?”

When we boiled the eggs with the silk fabric, there was such a stench in our house that we had to open all of our kitchen windows. What was that? Vinegar? Yucky boiled egg smell? Chemicals? I had no idea, but I felt so weird about it that we didn’t eat any of our eggs that we colored using this method last year. I threw out about two dozen silk tie dyed eggs…and then I felt awful and wasteful. What was the point of doing something cool like this if you just had to throw away perfectly good food at the end?

With Easter approaching, my husband and I recently discussed how cool it was to do the silk tie dyed eggs last year. After our conversation I added, “But I don’t want to do it again this year if we don’t know about the safety.”  As I started researching, there were many sites online that talked about this fun silk tie dyed egg project, but little that talked about the safety.


According to my research, fabric dyes are completely different from FDA authorized food-safe dyes. In fact, fabric dyes use many chemicals and can often be toxic. (Great, I poisoned an entire party last year without knowing.)

According to Susan Brittingham, who makes quilts and discusses hand-dyeing the material, you should never use hand dyes in your kitchen. In fact, Brittingham states on her site, “never use spoons, cups, or jars you have used for dyeing in the kitchen or for food again.”

Although we weren’t actually dyeing material, we were boiling the material to release the dyes…onto FOOD.

Gulp.

I definitely needed more information, so I contacted Colorado-based wholesale dye company BestDye.com and posed the question to them: Are silk tie dyed Easter eggs safe for consumption? Steven Lee answered back with this:

While I might be concidered [sic] somewhat of an expert on the use of cold water reactive type dyes when dyeing textiles, unfortunately I’m not an expert on dyeing easter eggs. I would advise against eating any eggs that were dyed with anything but food type dyes though. Silk ties could have been dyed with one of several types of dyes so you would not know what type of dye your silk was dyed with.

I then posed the same question to the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Jeannine Ertter-Prego, Consumer Affairs Specialist, promptly replied with:

There are colors that are approved for coloring eggs. Fabric dyes are not considered approved for this use. I can not recommend using this method for coloring eggs.

Sorry, everyone. It seems those tie dyed eggs are cool to look at and to use for centerpieces, but beyond that? They’re probably not safe for consumption. It looks like it’s back to the old food-approved dye pellets and boring food coloring for decorating Easter eggs.

SIGH.

  2. It occurs to me…what if you blew out the eggs before dying them? You can use the eggs for cooking, just clean the shells and dye them hollow. (Then, maybe, they are pretty inside and out, too?)

      Actually, Margaret, this question/idea came up a lot on craft sites because people wanted to keep the eggs for display/use in centerpieces (they really are beautiful). However, the technique requires wrapping the eggs in a couple of layers of fabric and then boiling for a while–something like 20 minutes (or longer). I’m not sure fragile eggshells would hold up, but it might be worth a try. It is one of the coolest craft techniques I’ve ever seen.

        Hmmm….I wonder if you filled them with water before you wrapped them, if the “inside” water would offer enough resistance to keep the shell intact.

        Oh, who the hell am I kidding? I’m no crafter. I don’t even play one on T.V.

    this makes me really glad that i think easter eggs are the devil’s own snack food. i like dyeing them, but i’d never eat them. the only colored eggs i’ll eat are (1) those malted milk robin’s eggs and (2) beet pickled eggs (and even then, i’ll only eat them if — and only if — my grandmother makes them).

    for serious: if i want easter eggs to EAT, i’ll make jello jiggler eggs. if i want egg salad, i just hard-boil a plain old egg and be done with it.

      You know, I’m always freaky about eating them, too. I LOVE to dye/decorate eggs, but after they’ve been fondled, hunted, and left out, it’s just too much for this germaphobe. *shudder*

  4. I am a little late to this party but I had the same question and then decided against taking the risk. This year I have convinced my girls we will do the vegetable died eggs again; this year we will be using red cabbage (teal), strawberries, blackberries and carrots. I think we will have just as much fun and I like the old fashioned aspect.
